When you sell a car in Dubai, the sale is only complete once the ownership is transferred with the RTA. Until then, fines and responsibility for the car can still come back to you. This guide explains the usual process for Dubai-registered cars. Other emirates follow similar steps through their own traffic authorities.
Important: requirements and fees change from time to time. Always check the latest details with the RTA before you start.
What the RTA asks for
For a change of vehicle ownership, the RTA lists these main requirements:
- A valid Emirates ID for both the buyer and the seller
- Insurance for the car in the buyer’s name (issued electronically)
- A technical inspection (also electronic)
- A release from the bank if the car has a loan (mortgage release)
- Proof of GCC specification compliance if the vehicle’s customs card does not show it
Before you go: clear fines, Salik and any loan
The transfer usually cannot go through while the car has unpaid traffic fines, unpaid Salik dues or an active bank loan. Check and pay fines first, and if the car is financed, settle the loan and get the bank’s release.
Where to do the transfer
Transfers are handled at RTA-approved vehicle testing and registration centres in Dubai, and many steps can also be done through the RTA’s Dubai Drive app. Some centres stay open late, which helps if you are busy during the day.
If the seller or buyer cannot attend
A representative can attend with a power of attorney. The RTA specifies that it must cover the sale and disposal of vehicles, and a power of attorney signed outside the UAE must be ratified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the consulate. If you have already left the country, see our guide on selling your car from abroad.
After the transfer
Once the transfer is complete, the car is registered to the buyer. Keep a copy of the transfer documents for your records, and cancel or move your own car insurance.
